Snake Plant recipe

6 inch (15 cm) plastic pot, normal home

  • Potting mix 40%2.75 cups (652 ml)
  • Perlite 30%2 cups (474 ml)
  • Coarse sand or grit 30%2 cups (474 ml)

Total about 7 cups. Gritty and fast-draining so it dries in 7 to 14 days.

How the calculator works

  1. Each plant starts from a tested base recipe, the same ratio used in our soil guides.
  2. Pot volume assumes a standard tapered nursery pot: base about 75% of the rim width, height about 90%, filled to 85%. One US cup is 237 ml.
  3. Dry homes get fewer draining ingredients (perlite, pumice, bark, sand) so the mix holds water longer. Humid homes get more.
  4. Terracotta wicks water through its walls, so it needs a little less drainage. Plastic and glazed ceramic hold water, so they get more.

For the reasoning behind each ratio, read the snake plant, pothos and monstera soil guides, or learn what each ingredient does in soil ingredients explained.
